Creating simple reports manually

The second toolbar of GED

General

The GED itself would be a very painful tools for creating reports. The most work is ususally to import Images, Data and explaining texts from IRIS to report pages. Now you will see the true power of a report generator which is not just simply any extern program which is connected 'anyway' by the clipboard and/or the DDE. Instead our report generator is directly integarted into the IRIS environment. With a few clicks you can include images, results and texts directly into reports. How this can be done is the topic of the following chapter.

The easiest method overall: One Click Reports

The absolutely easiest way to create reports is to use our predefined "one click reports":
Open the window AutoReport. Below the blue title 'one-click-reports' you'll find a short list of predefined reports. You can click for example the line '01-OneImage' and confirm the two following dialogs with OK. (The options of AutoReport permit to disable these two dialogs).
Instantly a standard report is generated. The current thermal image is added with a zoom factor of 200%. The report is shown by appearance of the GED. That report has been already stored to the harddisk. It can be reviewed with the external web browser or can be printed.
That's it. You wont find it easier anywhere.

For modifications of these one-click-reports and for creating own templates see AutoReport Window.

Manual createion of reports

An easy way to create reports is the manual method:
First you are opening the Report Windows (GED) additionally to the ThImage Window and palce then side by side on the desktop. (You can use a WinBox to store this window arrangement permanently to disk). The rest of this chapter describes only the manual and easy report functions located in the lefthand toolbar of the Report (GED) window. It offers all functions you need for creating manual reports.

Creating an empty report

First you click the 'new' tool (icon: white page) in the left toolbar. Caution: Dont confuse this one with the icon in the upper toolbar. The 'new' tool there creates only an empty HTML page, not a new report!
A new empty template appears in the GED. The standard installtion contains a title frame with an icon. You can modify this default template later. But right now we will use it the way it is.
Tip: The name and the location of the report can be found in the title bar of the Report (GED) window.

Adding the current ThImage window

In many cases you want to add the current view of the window ThImage to the report. There you've created already a thermal image with important information, mesurement results or more information you want to document. Now yoo click the icon with the small house and the scale (Add->ThImage). Instantly a copy of the content of the ThImage window appears in the report. This already finishes your first report! It is not necessary to store that report, because it is already located on your harddisk.

Tip: Pleae keep in mind that all 'add' functions are adding always at the END of the report. Later you'll see how content can be added also to other locations.

Preview as webpage

For review of this first report with your webbrowser you simply click the 'preview' icon (with the globe and the glasses below the 'open' icon). IRIS calls the web browser from your windows installation and shows the report how it would appear on the Internet or on a customers desktop. After review of the page you simply close the web browser.

Printing the report

For printing the report you click the printer icon in the upper toolbar of the GED. After selecting the printer the report is printed out. Details about printing and the printer setup can be found in the GED chapter of this manual.

Adding more IRIS elements to the report

The other icons of the left toolsbar are all adding more elements to the report. The second section adds more images or data. The third section is for text and more. Hier just a short description of these functions. Detailled description can be found in the chapter AutoReport of this manual.

Add only thermla image The icon with the small house without the scale is adding only the thermla image to the report.
Add only scale The icon with the scale is adding the current color scale. A dialog permits you to adpat the size (height) of the scale.
Add results (ThImage) The icon with the list adds the actual results from ThImage (histogram of results section) to the report. This creates a table.
Add results (DBdsp) The icon with the table adds the entire database as a table to the report. This is only useful if just a few data is stored - or if you have previously selected just a subset of data in the DBdsp window.
Add visible JPEG The icon with the landscape adds a visible JPEG form a SIT file to the report. This uses the Image window.
Add sound The icon with the speaker is adding a soundfile (WAV) to the report.
Add film The icon with the film reel is adding an image sequence to the report. A dialog offers to select the number of images per row and much more options.

Adding more special elements

Aside the thermal images, other images, sound and data there are more special elements which are frequently used. Here a short survey:

Line Break The icon with the left arrow enforces a line break. This element (<br>) permits to append images without any spacing in vertical direction. With an additive line break a spacing is created.
HTML instruction This icon to add any HTML token. There are many HTML codes which have no command in the IRIS. Herewith you can create more control command yourself.
Text The 'abi' icon permits to add a text line. The text you are entering is added as an own Paragraph (<p>...</p>).
Window The window icon adds any window of the IRIS to the report. This way you can (for exmaple) add a graph from DBgph or ThXyz easily.
First you activate the window which should be added to the report (click its title bar). The you click this icon.
Date The calendar icon adds the actual date as text to the report.
Time The clock icon adds the actual time to the report
12 The '12' icon adds a variable from the macro recorder to the report. This one is used by more sophisticated users.

Modifying the report manually

The special advantage of IRIS reports is that you can change them anytime also manually. At any time you can click into the report with the mouse and change it. Caution: Dont forget to save your changes before you continue to 'add with tools'.

Adding text

If you want to add text in front of an image the simply click the image. It becoimes marked (blue frame). The simply type your text. The entered text appears in front of the image. The GED is always operating in insert mode!

For adding text after/below and image it is the easiest way to click the image again. The press twice the keyboard key 'cursor right'. The cursor is located then after (below) the image and automatically insterted line break.

Deleting an image

For deleting an image you simply click it with the mouse. Then press the key DEL (delete). Caution: There is no further question or dialog. GED simply deletes!

Deleting an area

For deleting an entire area you should mark it with the mouse. It is rcommended to palce the mouse to the lefthand draw border and to mark only entire lines by moving the mouse up or down.
For deleting the marked elements you press the key DEL (delete).

Tip: For deleting tables it is necessary to delete the entire table. Deleting single coluimns is not possible right now. Deleting entire rows is difficult: It is best to select HTML token view. The you use the keyboard to naviagte to the start of a row. With pressed and kept SHIFT key and further navigation with the cursor keys you mark an entire row from <tr> to </tr> before you press the DEL key.

Inserting elements anywhere

All functions for extending a report are adding elements at the bototm of a page. For adding 'into' a specific location you select an element with the mouse. This is the new insert position. As long as the cursor is visible in the GED all functions are inserting at this cursor position - and are then moving the cursor after the inserted element.

For continuing to appoend at the end you use the GED function: Ged->View->Document bottom.
